Hello my name is Thomas Newlands. I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland, but now I live in sunny Cornwall. I've been studying and practising the craft of ceramics for about ten years. I have a BA honours in studio ceramics from Falmouth college of Arts which I received in 2003. Since then I've managed to keep my hands in clay and have slowly built up a body of work striving for as much perfection as possible . I hand build most of the time, but always try to progress with throwing techniques and endeavour to perfect the use of glazes.
My work mostly consists of smoke fired coiled pots. I use this method because I love the end result and no smoke firing is ever the same, giving it a unique quality. I mainly use terracotta clay as it has the fire red finish once it has been fired and smoked for up to 48 hours in saw dust and wood chippings.
